How Ciprofloxacin, Dexamethasone, and Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose work Ciprofloxacin, Dexamethasone, and Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is a combination of three medicines that treats bacterial eye and ear infections. Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that works by inhibiting the action of a bacterial enzyme called DNA-gyrase. This prevents bacterial cells from dividing and repairing, ultimately leading to their destruction. Dexamethasone is a steroid that blocks the production of certain chemical messengers in the body that cause inflammation (redness and swelling) and allergic reactions. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is a lubricant that mimics natural tears, providing temporary relief from burning and discomfort caused by dryness of the eye.
