Ferric Citrate is used in the treatment of high phosphate levels in the blood and iron deficiency.
How it Works
How Ferric Citrate works Ferric Citrate is an iron salt. When used to lower phosphate levels in the blood, it binds to dietary phosphates and limits their absorption. When used to treat iron deficiency, it converts to the ferrous form (Fe2+), allowing for the absorption of iron in the same form as dietary iron.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Ferric Citrate include discoloration of stool, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, cough, abdominal pain, and increased potassium levels in the blood.

- Do not chew or crush Ferric Citrate, as tablets may cause discoloration of the mouth and teeth.
- This medicine can cause your stools to appear darker in color, which is completely harmless.
- Inform your doctor if you experience severe diarrhea, nausea, constipation, vomiting, or abdominal pain after taking this medicine.
- Keep this product out of the reach of children and seek immediate medical attention if a child accidentally consumes it.
