How Glatiramer Acetate Works Glatiramer acetate belongs to a class of drugs known as immunomodulatory agents. It functions by modifying the body’s immune system, thereby preventing damage to the insulating covers (myelin sheath) and protecting brain and spinal cord cells. However, the exact mechanism by which it modifies the body’s immune system is not yet understood.

Common side effects of Glatiramer Acetate include rash, breathlessness, chest pain, vasodilation, and injection site reactions.

- It is administered via injection into the subcutaneous tissue only.
- Never inject it into a vein or muscle.
- Use a different injection site for each dose.

- Never reuse the same syringe.
- Discard any unused product or waste responsibly.
- Possible side effects include flushing, chest pain, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing, which typically resolve on their own within half an hour.
