How it Works

How Milk of Magnesia and Liquid Paraffin Work Milk of Magnesia and Liquid Paraffin is a combination of two laxatives (stool softeners) that effectively relieve constipation. Milk of Magnesia functions by drawing water into the intestine through osmosis, while Liquid Paraffin possesses lubricant properties that help retain water and fat in the stools. Together, they soften and lubricate the stool, making it easier to pass.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Milk of Magnesia and Liquid Paraffin include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort, electrolyte imbalance, hypotension (low blood pressure), muscle weakness, and respiratory depression.

Expert Advice

Milk of Magnesia + Liquid Paraffin is prescribed for short-term relief from constipation.
Take it at least 2 hours after taking other medications, as it may interfere with their absorption.
Certain medications, such as iron tablets and antibiotics, may cause constipation. Inform your doctor if you are taking any of these.
Notify your doctor if you have a history of stomach disorders, such as appendicitis or bowel obstruction.
