Azelaic Acid Uses: Azelaic Acid is used in the treatment of acne.

How Azelaic Acid Works Azelaic acid functions by eliminating acne-causing bacteria and reducing inflammation, including redness and swelling, of the skin.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Azelaic Acid include burning sensation, skin irritation, erythema (skin redness), itching, and xerosis.

Expert Advice

  • Apply it precisely only to the affected area.
  • If irritation occurs, discontinue use and consult your doctor.
  • If you have sensitive skin, apply Azelaic acid only once a day for the first week of treatment, then proceed to twice daily applications.
  • Before applying the cream/gel, clean the skin thoroughly with plain water and allow it to dry.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or other mucous membranes.
  • In case of accidental contact, wash immediately with large amounts of cold water.
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Azelaic Acid may alter skin color, particularly in individuals with darker skin. If you observe any changes in skin color, consult your doctor immediately.
Apply Azelaic Acid to the affected areas twice daily (morning and evening), unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Those with very sensitive skin should start with once daily application in the evening during the first week, then increase to twice daily.
Azelaic Acid is not officially approved for melasma treatment; it is primarily used for acne and rosacea. However, it may be prescribed for melasma at your doctor's discretion.
Azelaic Acid targets the bacteria responsible for acne (Propionibacterium acnes) and reduces the buildup of skin cells that clog pores, leading to blackheads and whiteheads.
Wash the treatment area thoroughly with water, using a mild cleanser if the skin is oily. Dry the skin before applying the cream, then gently rub it in. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly after application.
The effectiveness of Azelaic Acid varies by individual and depends on the initial severity of acne. Typically, noticeable improvement occurs after about 4 weeks, and for optimal results, it may be used for several months, but not exceeding 12 months continuously.
Apply Azelaic Acid as prescribed by your doctor. Generally, use 2.5 cm (approximately 0.5 g) of cream for the entire face. Adjust the amount if treating acne on the chest and back as well.
