How Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose Works Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is a lubricant that functions similarly to natural tears. It provides temporary relief from burning and discomfort caused by dry eyes.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose include blurred vision, eye pain, eye irritation, and eye itching.

Expert Advice

  • Your doctor has prescribed Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose to treat dry eye disease.
  • It stabilizes the natural tear film and maintains necessary lubrication to prevent your eyes from becoming dry and irritated.
  • Long-term use may be required.
  • Apply pressure on the corner of the eye (close to the nose) for about 1 minute immediately after instilling the drop.
  • Wait for at least 5-10 minutes before administering the next medication in the same eye to avoid dilution of this medicine.
  • A stinging sensation may occur for 1-2 minutes; notify your doctor if it persists for longer.
  • Ensure to use the medication within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.

Frequently asked questions

Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is an eye lubricant or artificial tear available as eye drops. It soothes irritation, burning, and discomfort associated with dry eye conditions caused by factors like low tear production, infrequent blinking, and environmental conditions. It can also assist with lens insertion and comfort.
Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is effective when used as prescribed by your doctor. Continue using it even if symptoms improve to prevent recurrence or worsening of your condition.
For dry eyes, instill 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed. For lens lubrication, apply 1 to 2 drops to each eye with lenses in place, as directed. Blink several times after applying the drops, and consult your doctor if unsure.
Store at or below 25°C and keep out of reach of children. Avoid touching the container tip to any surface or eye, replace the cap after use, and do not use after the expiry date or 30 days post-opening.
Possible side effects include visual disturbances, eye discharge, redness, irritation, burning, discomfort, eyelid swelling, and itching. Consult your doctor if any side effects are bothersome.
